A few area baseball and softball teams were in district tournament play on Wednesday.

The Izard County baseball team secured a regional bid after squeaking by Quitman 7-6 in the 2A-2 District Tournament at Cedar Ridge High School. The Cougars will return to Newark on Friday for their semifinal game against top-seeded South Side-Bee Branch.

Two area baseball teams squared off on the opening night of the 3A-1 District Tournament at Flippin. Bergman’s season ended with a 16-1 loss at the hands of Valley Springs.

Viola’s softball team was eliminated from the 1A-2 District Tournament at West Side. The Lady Longhorns came up just short as they fell to Shirley 5-4.

The Izard County softball team was able to invoke the mercy rule in the fifth inning, and Megan McBride threw a no-hitter as they routed White County Central 11-0 in their first game in the 2A-2 District Tournament at Cedar Ridge. McBride recorded nine strikeouts in the circle. She also led the offense with three hits, two runs and two RBIs; Hollie Johnson provided two hits, scored two runs and drove in three more; Makensie Yancey had two hits and scored twice; Quinn Johnson finished with a hit, two runs and two RBIs; Katie Orf and Willow Warden each added a hit and drove in two runs; and Tinlee Bailey ended up with a hit and two runs.
