Former Mountain Home coach named new boys basketball coach at Fort Smith Northside

A former basketball coach from Mountain Home is the new head boys’ basketball coach at Fort Smith Northside. Cody Wilmath, who spent five years as the Mountain Home Junior Bombers’ head coach and assistant coach for the Mountain Home high school team, was hired as the Grizzlies coach this week.

Wilmath, who has spent the last two years at North Little Rock after leaving Mountain Home, says Northside is a program rich in tradition.

At North Little Rock, Wilmath was hired as the high school boys’ assistant coach, but filled in as head coach for the first part of his first year which was great experience.

Wilmath says some folks may wonder about the hire, but he knows he has worked hard to prepare for this moment.

Wilmath graduated from Searcy High School in 2007 and played college basketball at Ecclesia College. He started his coaching career at Colby Community College in Kansas for one year, then spent four years at Ashdown before coming to Mountain Home.

Wilmath replaces McKenzie Pierce at Northside. Pierce was there just one season. He came from Blytheville and left this summer to return to the Chickasaws.

It’s been a busy few weeks for Wilmath. He married the former Grace Gilbert May 25.
