A local insurance agent has been arrested for committing insurance fraud. Forty-nine-year-old Wesley Allen Proffitt of Mountain Home turned himself in Tuesday morning for the felony charge of fraudulent insurance act.
According to the probable cause affidavit from the special prosecuting attorney for the Arkansas Insurance Department, in January, the Mountain Home Water Department investigated a leak at Proffitt’s residence and determined the leak was not present in the water box. The city employee talked to whom he believed was Wesley Proffitt over the video doorbell and told him his findings.
About one month later, the same city employee was doing work where Proffitt is employed and Proffitt talked to the employee again about the water leak.
Four days later, Proffitt added service line coverage for his residence. Ten days later, Proffitt filed a claim, reporting a water leak at his residence.
The insurance company interviewed Proffitt by phone to ask about the sequence of events. He told them someone is his office had a $10,000 claim on a water leak, so he decided it would be a good idea to get his own policy. He denied speaking to the city employee in January and said the employee must have spoken to another member of his family. He also denied knowing of the leak prior to purchasing the policy.
Proffitt was booked into the Baxter County Detention Center and released on $5,000 bond.
