Another warning of an active phone scam is being provided to the local community. The Baxter County Sheriff’s Office received several reports Monday from citizens concerning suspected scam phone calls they received from an individual pretending to be a law-enforcement or court official. The caller allegedly claims a potential victim has failed to appear for a court date or something similar and must immediately send money to avoid arrest.

A statement from the Baxter County Sheriff’s Office says its officials will not make any such calls. The calls are reportedly coming from scammers and are fraudulent in nature. Citizens should not send money anywhere and should not give or verify any personal identifying information including name, date of birth, address, social security number, driver license number, email address or any other identifiers. The public is also urged not provide any credit card or bank information of any kind to the caller, otherwise money could be lost to the caller.

Scam callers can sound official and be intimidating and persuasive. The best course of action to take is to hang up immediately and not speak to or continue to interact at all to the scam caller. For more information, contact the Baxter County Sheriff’s Office at 870-425-7000.
