Due to ongoing dry conditions across the Ozarks, officials at Buffalo National River have implemented new restrictions on campfires. Effective immediately, the lighting or maintaining of campfires is prohibited throughout the park, with limited exceptions.
Campfires will only be allowed in two specific areas:
– Designated campgrounds with established fire grates or rings.
– Gravel bars that are naturally devoid of vegetation.
Visitors may still use free-standing charcoal or gas grills in developed campgrounds and day-use picnic areas. Additionally, there are no restrictions on the use of propane or liquid-fueled stoves and lanterns, which are permitted in all areas of the park.
Park officials urge caution when building fires in permitted locations, advising campers not to leave fires unattended and to keep water nearby. Fires should be kept to a reasonable size and properly extinguished before leaving the site or going to bed.
