Senior Night ended with the Mountain Home High School football team clinching its first home playoff game in 16 years. The Bombers, currently ranked fifth in Class 6A by the Arkansas Sports Media, dominated their final home game of the regular season by routing Van Buren 42-7.
Mountain Home got the scoring started just over four minutes into the game when Barrett Miller faked the handoff and ran the ball in from 32 yards out. The Bombers padded their lead further inside the final minute of the opening quarter on a one-yard run by Jacob Chenowith. The Pointers cut into their deficit on the first play of the opening quarter when Trenton Cooley caught a screen pass from Hayden Williford and took it 73 yards to the house, but that would be their only score of the game. Mountain Home added to their lead as Chenowith had two more touchdowns in the period from five and two yards out, and they went into the locker room up 20.
Chenowith picked up in the third quarter where he left off with a 24-yard touchdown run three minutes into the period. Less than a minute later, the Bombers scored again on an eight-yard keeper by Miller, and Chenowith added a two-point conversion to make sure the mercy rule went into effect for the remainder of the game.
Miller had 20 carries for 202 yards and two touchdowns and was 5-of-6 through the air for 103 yards. Chenowith added 132 yards on the ground as he goes past 1,400 rushing yards for the season. As a team, Mountain Home had 64 rushes for 433.
The Bombers improve to 8-1 on the season and 5-1 in the 6A-West, they now hold sole possession of second place with Shiloh Christian’s loss to Lake Hamilton. Van Buren falls to 3-6 and 2-4.
If Mountain Home is able to win their season finale next week at Greenwood, they’ll enter the playoffs as the top-seeded team in the 6A-West. Their last home playoff game was in 2008 when they lost in the opening round to Watson Chapel.
