Mountain Home residents are reminded to remove political yard signs by this Sunday, following Tuesdays general election. City ordinance allows political signs up to 60 days before an election but requires removal within five days after.
A fine of $25 per day will apply for each overdue sign, with the candidate advertised responsible for removal. Candidates could be ticketed if signs are not removed.
Mountain Home City Clerk Scott Liles says, ”People keeping their yard signs up past the deadline is not usually a problem, and potential violations can usually be addressed by the City with a simple knock on the door or a phone call. Still, the City occasionally has to issue a violation for keeping a yard sign out too long.”
An exception to the Sunday deadline applies to candidates in the Dec. 3 runoff election, who may continue displaying their signs until Dec. 8.
Liles explains “the most common violation we see after the general election is what I call orphan signs. That’s where someone puts a sign out somewhere, forgets about it, and the candidate isn’t aware that there’s a sign there. The candidate is trying to pick their signs up, but doesn’t know about that one. Those signs are the ones you see lingering around for days or weeks after the election.”
