Both of the Mountain Home High School basketball teams concluded their trips to northwest Arkansas on Friday with one taking home a trophy.
The Lady Bombers were crowned the champions of the Red Dog Invitational at Springdale with a 61-52 victory over the host Lady Bulldogs. Springdale led for much of the first half and went into the locker room up eight at halftime. The Lady Bulldogs extended their lead to double digits multiple times in the third quarter before Mountain Home started making their comeback and ended the period with a five-point deficit. Springdale was up three in the final quarter, but the Lady Bombers outscored the Lady Bulldogs 14-2 in the final 3 1/2 minutes to post the nine-point win.
Laykin Moore led Mountain Home with 18 points, Brooklyn Mitchell scored 14, and Jayla Yonkers and Livi Fosness each added 11. Kiara Owens had 16 points for Springdale.
The Lady Bombers improve to 9-2 on the season. The Lady Bulldogs fall to 6-2.
Mountain Home’s boys played earlier in the evening at Farmington and defeated Shiloh Christian 61-40 in their last game in the Bad Boy Mowers Cardinal Classic. The Bombers came out firing as they outscored the Saints 24-12 in the opening period and extended their lead to 21 at halftime. The second half was played fairly even as the Bombers went on to win by 21.
Mountain Home was led by Blaine Tate and Rhett Gilbert with 18 points each, and Jackson Corp chipped in 12. No one was in double figures for Shiloh Christian.
The Bombers are now 7-4 on the year. The Saints drop to 3-7.
Both Mountain Home teams will be in Jonesboro on Tuesday for a matchup with Nettleton.
