As daytime highs begin to clear out the wintry conditions, overnight lows pose the danger of roads refreezing leaving dangerous conditions for drivers. The Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) is working diligently to reduce risks for drivers. Crews are applying rock salt, which is grittier and more abrasive than other materials, to help prevent ice buildup on the roads.
For safety, drivers are advised to stay off the roads through the weekend if possible. Even small patches of ice can cause serious problems, especially as temperatures remain low.
For those who must travel, ARDOT is actively managing the significant snow accumulation across the state. Crews will continue working through the night and over the weekend to monitor bridges and overpasses.
Safety tips for drivers:
-If you start to slide, avoid slamming on the brakes
-When approaching a hill, try to gain momentum before the incline
-Slow down and steer smoothly when navigating curves
