On January 15, two dozen firefighters and a Tyson Foods employee were treated and released from a hospital for chemical burns after responding to a fire at a Tyson Foods plant in Berryville, as reported by local NBC affiliate KY3.
Carroll County Judge David Writer stated that the fire began around 7 p.m. and was contained shortly before 10 p.m. The cause and location of the fire remain under investigation, and multiple fire departments were involved in the response.
The chemical burns were caused by 99% Caustic Soda Beads, which are used in various industries, including industrial cleaning, water treatment, chemical manufacturing, food processing, and pulp and paper production.
KY3 reported that the firefighters are in stable condition, and Tyson Foods deployed a Hazmat remediation team to the scene.
In a statement, Tyson Foods said, “We appreciate the quick response from emergency personnel following a fire at our Berryville facility on Wednesday evening. The fire was extinguished, and we have resumed operations. The safety of our team members and the community is our top priority, and we are working closely with authorities to determine the cause of the incident.”
McKelvey confirmed to KY3 that there are no risks to the public outside the plant.
