Boone County woman accused of using bank card without permission to make 140 purchases

A Boone County woman is accused of fraudulently using a bank card without consent. Forty-five-year-old Tonda Martin faces charges of financial identity fraud, theft of property, and fraudulent use of a credit or debit card.According to a probable cause affidavit, Harrison police were dispatched to a local bank, where they learned a customer’s bank card had been used without permission. Investigators determined Martin had obtained the victim’s card information and was using it to order food deliveries to her home and pay herself through PayPal. Several online gaming companies and other goods and services were also charged without consent.

The victim told police his girlfriend and Martin are best friends. He said he had allowed Martin to use his card to help pay his and his girlfriend’s online bills, but she later returned the card and should not have had access to the information.

In an interview, Martin admitted to using the card to pay the victim’s bills but denied making any other purchases. She initially claimed she no longer had the card information but later said she had stored both the victim’s and his girlfriend’s details on her phone. She also admitted to playing online games but stated the victim played them as well.

Between Sept. 7 and Oct. 15, authorities say approximately 140 charges were made, totaling $2,930.72.

Martin is facing a felony count of financial identity fraud, a felony count of theft of property and a felony count of fraudulent use of a credit card or debit card.
