Many across the state and in Mountain Home have started receiving strange texts regarding owed road toll payments. Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin warns that these texts are likely scams.

The scam involves fraudsters posing as toll agencies, attempting to steal personal information and money. Victims receive a text stating they have an unpaid toll and must click a link to avoid fines or a suspended license.

Attorney General Griffin says “While Arkansas does not have any toll roads, many Arkansans may have traveled during the winter holidays to states that do impose tolls on certain roads. Because of heightened holiday travel, some Arkansans might be more easily tricked into thinking these are legitimate texts about unpaid toll fees.”

Griffin advises residents not to send payments to entities that contact them solely via text. For anyone who receives a toll text, he recommends not clicking on any links and deleting the message and reporting it as junk. If there is reason to believe the message is legitimate, contact the state’s tolling agency using a trusted phone number or website.

If a link was clicked, the Attorney General’s Office recommends taking steps to protect personal information, such as changing passwords, monitoring financial accounts and disputing any unfamiliar charges.
