The Missouri State University community is mourning the loss of a member of its football team. Twenty-one-year-old Todric McGee died early Saturday from what authorities describe as a “possible accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound.”
According to a report from ESPN, a Springfield Police Department spokesperson says officers were performing a wellness check Friday morning when they located McGee. He was transported to the hospital and later pronounced dead. The investigation into McGee’s death is ongoing.
McGee was a fifth-year senior who started each of the last two seasons for Missouri State. He received an All-Missouri Valley Football Conference selection in 2023.
Bears’ head coach Ryan Beard said in a statement, “Our football family is in shock and in mourning at the loss of Todric. We ask everyone to please respect the privacy of his family and our MoState football team at this time as we begin the healing process. Join us in praying for Todric and the people who loved him.”
Missouri State athletic director Patrick Ransdell issued a state on behalf of the university and said, “This tragedy has shaken our football program to the core, and we want them to know we are here to support them in every way possible at this extremely difficult time.”
